Aftermath Of Ebola In The Country

Even though the fear of Ebola seems to be reducing nationwide after it was confirmed that there was no more patient with the dreaded disease, another issue has reared its head which is the cost of testing for the disease in hospitals.

This is because some foreign missions and other bodies now insist on any Nigerian traveler producing certificates to verify that they don’t have Ebola.
According to This Day newspaper, in University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo state, patients who want to ascertain the status of their health were turned back when they could not afford the sum of N10,000 being demanded by the hospital authorities to check if they were Ebola-positive or negative. Patients also have to pay a compulsory fee of N1,600 first for consultancy.

Many who could not afford the bill especially after payment of the consultancy fee complained of the exorbitant charge and returned to their homes with some wondering why such fee should be charged when many people are living in fear of the deadly virus.

However, the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Ayodeji Bobade, is yet to make a public confirmation of this purported fee.

I sure hope this is looked into because if people cannot afford to go for an Ebola test are we really safe? The test should be something people can afford to encourage them do it which can help prevent a scourge in terms of early detection.
