Last week, the health minister, Dr Haliru Alhassan warned Nigerians to be very careful so the dreaded Ebola virus does not return to the country in December because many Nigerians all over the world including African countries where Ebola is prevalent might want to return home for the festive period.
Another warning is now coming from the Federal Department of Animal Production and Husbandry Services, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Abuja. This because according to a statement issued by them, despite the ban on the importation of poultry and poultry products, frozen chicken still continues to find its way into local markets through the land border from countries with a report of high rate of people that have the Ebola disease.
It is reported that 90 per cent of frozen chicken in Nigeria comes in through the Republic of Benin and other West African Countries and the sale of frozen chicken despite being a means of livelihood for some Nigerians, poses a great health risk.
Nutritionists believe that there is a health risk due to the length of storage of the frozen chicken before reaching Nigeria which is usually because of the break in cold chain during several hours of land journey through illegal routes, smuggling and absence of quality certification or standard of instruments used.
