It was indeed shocking to hear that renowned playwright and Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka has got cancer. He made it known himself during a press conference at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State yesterday.
However, the good news is that he has been managing it since last year December and according to an expert and Founder of African Cancer Centre, Lagos, Olu Williams, he won't die of the disease.
Meanwhile, Wole Soyinka said he decided to open up so as to create awareness about cancer and help people take measures to prevent it or seek prompt medical attention for cure.
He said he has been able to survive the silent killer disease because of early detection, treatment and proper dieting, adding that it has also dawned on him that his family has a history of cancer ailment.
His son, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka, who is also the Commissioner for Health in Ogun State, also confirmed to the Nation Newspaper, that his father is being treated for prostate cancer.
