The issue of education seems to be one of
serious concern right now in Nigeria. In the north the terrorists don't want
education to thrive and in the west it seems the government is moving that way
too with the sudden crazy hike in school fees.
Just yesterday students of University of Lagos
(UNILAG) closed the school gates for hours causing a serious traffic gridlock
in the area. Their protest was in reaction to the N20, 000 naira penalty for
late registration which was introduced by the school authorities.
This is even small in comparison with
students of the Lagos State University (LASU) who have been protesting for
weeks now over the major increase in their tuition fees which has now run into
hundreds of thousands.
The state government had directed that
prospective students of Arts/Education are to pay N193, 750; Social and
Management Sciences, N223, 750; Law, N248,750; while those in
Communication/Transport, Sciences, Engineering and College of Medicine are to
pay, N238,750, N258,750, N298,750 and N348,750 respectively as against present
fees which ranges between N25,000 and N62,500!!!!!!!!
All these make me wonder to what end?
Education is meant to help impart knowledge and skills from one generation to
the next through teaching, training and research but if the youth of the
country are being discouraged from getting it what does that now mean for the
country at large?
Are they saying it’s only the rich that should
be educated or what???
