After battling the dreaded Ebola Virus outbreak for the past 6 months, the Liberia Education Ministry has finally announced the re-opening of schools in the country.
This was indeed a welcome development and according to the National School Superintendent, Benjamin Jacobs the re-opening was initially planned for the 2nd of February but had to be postponed by two weeks.
This was to ensure adequate distribution of health and sanitation kits, including hand-washing buckets and thermometers to public and private schools.
Also speaking on this development, the Deputy Education Minister, Ramses Kumbuyahm, said the ministry has trained 15,000 teachers and school administrators on how to implement health and safety protocols to prevent further Ebola infection.
He also confirmed that the number of pupils per class has been reduced in an attempt to reduce transmission of the virus, while sports activities have been temporarily banned to avoid body contact.
Furthermore, the ministry has waived junior high school fees for boys, as well as junior and senior high school fees for girls due to the economic hardship suffered by parents from the Ebola outbreak.
Liberia was one of the countries hit the hardest by the Ebola epidemic alongside Sierra Leone and Guinea. Meanwhile Guinea re-opened schools in January, while Sierra Leone plans to re-open schools in March.
