It is not news that sometimes the police harasses us more than they are our friends contrary to their slogan which states "the police is your friend". However, that might change soon as the Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has warned policemen in different commands across the country against excessive use of force.
Speaking at the force headquarters yesterday, he said that Human Rights would be introduced into the curriculum of all Police training colleges nationwide. He made this known while presenting the Human Rights manuals for policemen and Human Rights desk officers, prepared with the support of the CLEEN Foundation, the Swiss Embassy and other foreign missions,
The manuals are to be issued to all policemen to enable them educate themselves on how to relate with the members of the public while carrying out their responsibilities and respecting the rights of Nigerians.
Although this won't be the first time human rights would be introduced by the Police, the difference now is that every officer will be given a manual to guide them.
