British police have launched an investigation into abusive tweets sent to Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli. The Italian international professional player tweeted "Man Utd...LOL" on Sunday after Liverpool's rivals Mancheser United lost in a surprise 5-3 defeat by Leicester City in the English Premier League.
24 year old Balotelli's tweet was retweeted 150,000 times and was met with a torrent of racial abuse which according to the police is an escalating issue.
However, for Mario Balotelli, this isn’t a new thing as last year when he was an AC Milan player he vowed to walk off the pitch if he was racially abused at a football game after being subjected to racist chanting during an Italian league game against Roma at AC Milan's San Siro stadium.
In August, Balotelli joined Liverpool from Milan in a 26.5 Million Dollar deal and has scored one goal since signing. He also used to be with Manchester City for two and a half years where he helped the team to a first league title in 44 years.
