What could
have made a 15 year old outgoing young boy decide to go to school and kill his
class mate with a gun? This question has been on my mind since I came across
the news of a school shooting in
Oregon,America just a few days ago.
This
school shooting thing seems to be on the increase in that part of the world but
it bothers me because after all terrorism was rampart in that part of the world and here we are in Nigeria now becoming one of the worst countries with terrorists
no thanks to Boko Haram.
Infact,this
particular school shooting was the third outbreak of deadly gun violence in a
US high school in less than three weeks!
In this
instance,Jared Micheal Padgett had gone to school,Reynolds High School,
prepared to kill as he had taken his dad’s guns which included an assault
rifle,a handgun with ammunition hidden in a guitar case. Getting to school he
killed 14 year old Emilio Hoffman in the boys locker room,injured a teacher, locked
himself in a bathroom and finally killed himself with the same gun!His
parents are still in shock because he was a ‘good boy and highly spiritual’.

Reports suggest that the
sudden rise in these kind of killings could be attributed to the easy way anybody
can own a gun in the United States a fact which president Barack Obama says is
the biggest frustration of his administration as the American society hasn’t
been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people
who can cause so much damage.
My heart goes out to both families though and my prayer is that God will continue to help us with our children.
