It seems like in recent times
everywhere you look, the TV,radio, magazines, social media and oh yes blogs
you see or hear the name Lupita Nyongo!!
Infact it has become a case
of 'Much Ado About Lupita', why ?you might have been wondering, well I'm about to
do a little expose on that.
Like many of us,Lupita has
been around for a while, she is actually 31 years old(you can close your mouth
now...Lol) and we just got to hear about her majorly last year.
Now I'm going to go spiritual
a bit(so forgive me) but the truth is you are hearing all the rave about Lupita
because she is now excelling and soaring in her chosen profession which is
acting.
Just a few weeks ago she won
the coveted Oscar for The Most Supporting Actress for the movie 12 Years a Slave. And as if that's not enough she has become a fashionista of sorts as
she seems to always get it right on the red carpet with her dressing(which is a
major feat with all the critics and bad mouth people)
Let me shed a little more
light(no pun intended) on who Lupita really is. She is a very dark skinned lady
from Kenya (How many of us are really
confident in our own skin?toning, bleaching, whitenicious anyone?)
Lupita Nyong'o who was born on the 1st
of March 1983 made history by becoming the first woman from Kenya to win this
year’s Oscar for best supporting actress for her acting in the movie 12 Years a Slave.
The beauty of her winning this award is how the
other Americans in the audience gave her a standing ovation when her name was
called. This showed that she really deserved it.
Thirty one year old Lupita gave a speech when she
received the award saying ‘this award
reminds me and every little child that no matter where you are from, your
dreams are valid’
This movie that won her the Oscar Award is
actually her first major role! And that’s not all; Lupita Nyongo was also
nominated for other very important awards which include the Golden Globe Award
and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Despite the fact that she lives in America, she
is fluent in her native Luo language and can also speak other languages which
include English, Swahili and Spanish(how many of us are fluent in our mother tongue?)
She also always encourages people who are dark skinned
to embrace their African heritage no matter where they find themselves. She stays
true to her Kenyan roots and is proudly African in an industry where
differences are not easily accepted. In fact, instead of changing her name she
released a video teaching people how to correctly pronounce it thereby claiming
her African identity.(lets not lie most of us are guilty of shortening our names to sound funky:Bimz,Bimzy...GUILTY!!!!)
I round off by encouraging us to stay true to our passion because its just a matter of time and we will SHINE....as long as we are DILLIGENT and CONSISTENT though!!!!
So glad to read about Lupita here, Bimz! Oops, Bimbo. Lol. Lemme preserve my mother tongue jooooooor. Check out biodunodunukwe.wordpress.com for Preserving our Mother Language
