Who Is To Blame For Poor Participation Of Youths In Nigerian Politics?

That is the question that crosses my mind as I saw reports that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara were complaining about the inadequate representation of youths in government.

They made this known at the inauguration of the Nigerian chapter of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, IPU, of the Young Parliamentarians, FYP, led by Raphael Igbokwe last week.

I remember during the elections earlier this year, I saw posters of some young people contesting for various positions. The truth is most of them were dropped at the primaries and didn't even make it to the main election table at all which makes it seem like young people are no longer the leaders of tomorrow.

When you look at the politicians in the country now, it seems like the average age is 50 or thereabouts and most of them are not even read to leave once their tenure is over but just keep changing job functions or positions within the government.

This is amazing though, considering the fact that former head of state, Yakubu Gowon took over leadership of Nigeria at the age of 28 years. Other military leaders that came after him like Murtala Muhammed and Olusegun Obasanjo were even in their thirties when they ruled Nigeria.

Something really needs to be done although Saraki has expressed support for youths taking up leadership roles and says he would ensure the participation of more young people in governance.
