Senate Says Comptroller-General Of Customs Has No Right To Lift Ban On Importation Of Rice?

The Comptroller General of Customs, Hahmed Ali has been summoned by the senate to explain why he lifted the ban on the importation of rice through the land borders.

This came about following a motion moved moved by Senator Adamu Aliero, decrying the comptroller-general’s decision. According to him, the comptroller's action would further undermine local production of rice by Nigerian farmers.

Recall that the ban on importation of rice through the land borders was actually placed by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan and the comptroller-general did not have the power to unilaterally lift the ban.

Meanwhile, Senate President, Bukola Saraki has given the adhoc committee on Import Duty Waivers 2 weeks to report back to the Senate on their findings.
