IGP Of Police Cautions Force Against Use Of Firearms During Forthcoming Elections

Several days after controversial Assistant Inspector General of Police, Joseph Mbu, said the police in his division will kill 20 persons for the death of any policeman, the Inspector-
General of Police, IGP, Suleiman Abba, has cautioned the general police force against the use of firearms during the forthcoming general elections “except in extreme circumstances”.

He gave this warning yesterday while addressing senior officers in his office saying, the Nigerian police have a mandate to save and protect lives and not to kill contrary to recent statements in the media.

AIG Mbu had given an order to his men that “If they shoot you, shoot back in self-defence. Anybody who fires you, fire him back in self-defence”

This remark drew widespread condemnations, with the APC allegedly saying the AIG is a barbaric and lawless officer who must be immediately cautioned.
