ASUU Says LASU Vice Chancellor Not Competent To Run The School

Away from politics, trouble seems to be brewing for the Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University, LASU, John Obafunwa, as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, have accused him of not possessing a PhD and holding two jobs.

ASUU’s Zonal Coordinator, Lagos Zone, Adesola Nasir, who made the allegation, said that apart from being LASU’s VC, Obafunwa was also the Chief Medical Examiner of Lagos State.

This, according to him is an aberration to the laws setting up a university for it to be headed by a personality without a PhD certificate.

However, reacting to this, the Vice Chancellor has described the allegation of his non-possession of a PhD as “ignorance at its height’’. He says anyone who has questions on his PhD/Fellowship issue should contact the National Universities Commission, NUC.

Professor Obafunwa then went ahead to list some Nigerian universities with vice-chancellors in the Medical field and they include, the University of Ibadan, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; the Federal University, Lokoja; Osun State University and LASU.

  1. What the school needs is a competent administrator. Holding a PHD is not pertinent. We depend too much on paper qualifications and not on ability.
