Students of the University of Jos have been ordered to vacate the campus following the crisis that emerged after a protest by students over a hike in fees turned violent.
The protest started yesterday morning with students holding university administrators hostage in their offices. They said the fee of N27,800 has now been increased to N60,000 while complaining that they were forced to pay for developmental levy which has never been used for any development within the university.
Meanwhile all efforts by the student union government to speak with the Vice Chancellor of the university Prof. Hayward Babale Mafuyai, was met with a brick wall as he refused to negotiate with the students.
Following his refusal to speak with students, they took to the streets to protest, blocking all roads leading to the university thereby bringing all activities to a standstill. All university activities were also boycotted including the exams that was meant to start this week.
According to reports, security officials where later called in to calm the situation, but a soldier attached to the Special Task Force on Jos crisis (STF), opened fire on protesters leaving at least 8 students with gun wounds including a blind one.
The University Registrar, Jully Dandam, has announced that the institution will remain closed till further notice.
