Just as Nigeria and Senegal have been declared Ebola-Free by the World Health Organisation, WHO, South Africa says they are not ready to host the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON in January if Morocco withdraws because of the Ebola epidemic.
This was according to their Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula earlier today. He said the Confederation of African Football, CAF has reportedly approached South Africa, Ghana and five others countries ahead of a November 2 meeting to decide on the future of the continent’s premier football event.
Fikile Mbalula went ahead to even tweet that “Hosting AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations) is a NO NO.” He then went on to say: “Even before taking the matter to cabinet, I can tell you unambiguously and categorically that hosting is a no no,”.
Although he gave the excuse that South Africa hosted the 2013 AFCON, their budget cannot accommodate hosting the 2015 AFCON
Meanwhile, the Moroccan government officials have said last weekend that they want the January 17-February 8 tournament postponed because they feared a spread of the deadly Ebola virus.
