More than 4.2 million people registered to vote on the question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?"A Yes vote for independence would have meant that Scotland, with its population of about 5.3 million people, splits from the rest of the United Kingdom, made up of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
British Prime Minister David Cameron will surely heave a sigh of relief as he had pleaded for there not to be a split.
The votes stood at 55% for No and 45% voted Yes.
