Boy Child,Girl Child or Just Healthy Child??

Sometime this week I read in the papers that the Supreme court has overruled a law that forbids a female child from inheriting her late father's estate in Iboland in Nigeria.

While this is a very welcome development,the fact remains that its not only in Iboland that female children are being discriminated against.

In so many families in Nigeria, if a male child isn't born people are concerned and the usual consensus despite the fact that female children have been born into that family is,' who will carry on the family name?'

Personally I wonder why people feel this way because even the act of having a child whether male or female is a miracle that could ever happen to any woman.

 So many people have been married for years and have no child; do you think a particular sex is what's on their mind or rather having any child at all?

Let's now move to the issue of having a healthy child whether male or female. In September 2006 I lost one of my children to a rare disease called 'Biliary Atresia'. From January of that year till the month she died we were practically living in the hospital and I can tell you for free that those were the worst months of my life!!!!

That was when I realised that having a healthy child beats sex issues of male or female gender.

I met other parents with children both male and female that had other horrible ailments and one thing we all had in common was for our children to be hale and hearty again whether boy or girl.

Scientifically, it has been proven that it is the man that determines the sex of the child. Sex is determined by two chromosomes, X and Y. A female is XX while a male is XY. Since women completely lack the Y chromosome, they always contribute an X chromosome to the baby. The sex of a child is thus determined if the sperm that fertilizes the egg is carrying another X or a Y from the man.

And contrary to some people's belief, female children are not useless. In fact nowadays it seems like women are overtaking men and building successful careers and making names for themselves.

I really hope this new ruling by the Supreme Court giving female children hope will be accepted by everyone and will change that wrong impression that having only female children is a crime.
