Women continue to emerge leaders worldwide as Mauritius has just appointed 56 year old Ameenah Firdaus Gurib-Fakim as its first female president yesterday.
The prominent scientist was approved by the parliament of Mauritius as the Indian Ocean island nation's new president, making her the first woman to hold the ceremonial position.
Mauritius is one of the richest, and least corrupt countries in Africa, a middle-income nation of about 1.3 million people.
Meanwhile, the new president is currently director of the Mauritius Centre for Phytotherapy Research (CEPHYR), which carries out research on plants for use in cosmetics, nutrition and therapy.
