Federal Government Loses 1 Billion Naira Annually From International Flights To Nigeria

There are indications that the Federal Government actually loses about $1 Billion annually from international airlines which do not pay royalties to cover their flights to Nigeria.

The Federal Government discontinued the collection of royalties from foreign airlines on the argument that Nigerian airlines are also flying into the countries of those carriers that also operate in Nigeria.

However, according to investigations by This Day newspapers, out of 27 foreign airlines that fly into Nigeria, Nigerian owned airlines only fly to London, United Kingdom, South Africa and New York, in United States.

What this means is that the decision by the Ministry of Aviation for foreign airlines to stop paying royalties was done to the benefit of the international carriers as against Nigeria’s interest.

Right now, the Nigerian government earns nothing from the international airlines and many of them have increased their frequencies into the country, as the government is yet to adopt slot allocation policy whereby airlines that fly into the country are made to pay for slots, as it is done in many other countries.
