36 year old former England defender, Rio Ferdinand, has brought his 19 year football career to an end.
London-born Ferdinand, had 12 years at Manchester United after spells with West Ham and Leeds, last played for QPR in March. When he joined Manchester United in 2002, he broke the transfer fee record at 30 Million Pounds.
It really can't be a coincidence that he is retiring the same month he lost his wife, Rebecca Ellison who died on the 1st of May, to breast cancer.
However, Ferdinand says he feels this it the right time for him to retire from the game that he loves. Before his retirement, he had played for England 81 times and he says those are all treasured memories that will last a lifetime.
Ferdinand won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and three League Cup trophies in 12 seasons with Manchester United.
