University Degree Soon To Be Minimum Qualification To Become A Teacher In Nigeria

There are indications that the Federal Government has plans to make a bachelor’s degree the minimum qualification to be required of anyone who wants to teach in the country.

This was made known by the Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, when Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury, paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja.

The Finnish Ambassador said all teachers in Finland have a minimum of a Master’s degree and teaching is a highly competitive profession in his country as a result of huge interest by many qualified people.

In response, Shekarau noted that the Federal Government will explore all measures to restore the respect, dignity and status of teachers in the country as the target of the Federal Government is to make a first degree a minimum teaching qualification.

Since 1980, the minimum teaching qualification to teach in schools is a National Certificate in Education, NCE.
