Indefinite Strike To Commence In Polytechnics Nationwide

Its bad news for students of the polytechnic as the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has directed its members nationwide to embark on an indefinite strike from Wednesday, 25th February this week.

This is to demand the implementation of a 4 year old agreement with the Federal Government. The union had embarked on a 9 month strike prior to this which ended in July 2014

They suspended the strike then following a promise from the Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau who was newly appointed, that he would resolve the matter within 3 months.

Dr. Chibuzor Asomugha, the President of ASUP, told newsmen after an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council ,NEC, that there will be a dissolution of the governing councils of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Anambra State and that of Ado Ekiti in Ekiti State for causing avoidable problems in their institutions.

Some other grievances of the union include the continued discrimination against Polytechnic graduates in Public Service and in the labour market in Nigeria and non implementation of the approved salary package.
