It has become the norm for inequality in terms of cut off marks as regards admission into Federal Government Colleges in Nigeria. What usually obtains is that the cut off in Lagos will be different from that of the North or the East.
However, all this disparity will come to an end as the Federal High Court has declared unconstitutional this method in a landmark judgement delivered in Lagos yesterday by Honourable Justice John Tsoho in a suit filed by Olisa Agbakoba SAN against the Federal Government and Education Minister.
There will no more be any discrimination in the cut off marks as on grounds of ethnicity, gender, religion and place of origin. In the Judgment, the Federal High Court declared that application of different cut-off marks based on states of origin and gender violates the candidates’ fundamental rights to freedom from discrimination guaranteed by Section 42(1) of the 1999 Constitution.
The Federal High Court has now ordered the Federal Government and Minister of Education to apply uniform cut-off marks to all candidates seeking admission into Federal Government Colleges, irrespective of their states of origin.
