Suicide Is NEVER An Option To Fight Depression!

Suicide continues to be a wrong option for so many people that are depressed or just very sad about issues in life generally.

I came across a story yesterday of  a 45 year old lady, Titi Branch in the US who committed suicide in her house. This is a woman who seemed to have it all, she was one  of the co-founders of the wildly successful natural hair care line, Miss Jessie’s.

She was also a graduate of the University of Maryland, and had created the lucrative haircare line with her sister Miko as well as running a very popular New York salon which they launched about 10 years ago.

According to reports, Titi was battling with depression which led her to taking her own life. I am sure you will be wondering what can she be depressed about after all she seemed to have everything. Well, the definition of everything means different things to different people.

Some people have got all the money in the world but are in unhappy marriages or don't even have any relationship with the opposite sex and that in itself is depressing to them. For some people it is the issue of the weight or lack there of ( too fat or too thin)

Meanwhile for others it might be that they have been looking for jobs to no avail or they have got jobs that they feel are beneath them. For some it might be self confidence issues, no friends, no family...the list goes on and on.

However, while you can't just wave a magic wand and make depression go away, you can actually start with little steps and trust me it gets better gradually. Feeling better takes time, but you can get there if you make positive choices for yourself each day.

1: Cultivate supportive relationships

It is never good to just keep to yourself as loneliness makes depression worse. So try and maintain close relationships with some people and add social activities to your routine like going out once in a while and mingling with other people.

2. Allow yourself to be less than perfect

Many depressed people are perfectionists, holding themselves to impossibly high standards and then beating themselves up when they fail to meet them. Some people even compare themselves to others and when they fall short, depression sets in.

 3. Learn to take care of yourself.

This is very important like I said earlier, being too fat or too thin can set off depression so why not change your lifestyle? Adopt healthy eating habits, sleeping habits and follow a healthy lifestyle.

4. Also try and keep stress in check

Easier said than done I know, but you have to make an attempt. For those of us that live in Lagos with the traffic and transport situation, stress levels can be very high but you need to look for ways to manage it. You can give yourself a day out of the week where you just pamper yourself, go window shopping, go to the beach or just take yourself out for a treat!

While you can’t force yourself to have fun or experience pleasure all the time, you can choose to do things that you used to enjoy. It could be a hobby or sport you used to like, music, art, writing, playing tennis, golfing or even dancing! Put on music in your room and dance!!

5. Pray! Praise! Pray!

Oh yes with all said and done the fact still remains that prayer is the key and glue that holds it all together. We are all spiritual beings that occupy a physical body so communicating with God who created us will definitely go a long way. He knows what and how you feel and just wants you to trust and depend on Him through singing, worshiping and praying.

Even if your depression doesn't lift immediately, you’ll gradually feel more upbeat and energetic as you make time for these things.

However, if you find your depression getting worse seek professional help. This doesn't mean you’re weak, rather it shows you are taking a positive step towards getting better.
