Indeed people from Ondo state would be glad to hear that the popular Idanre Hills Cultural Landscape will soon be listed into the prestigious World Heritage Scheme by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
This is because the team of experts from the world body have concluded its final tour of inspection on the site yesterday. The team was in the state to finalise the process of getting Idanre Hills enlisted by UNESCO in the shortest possible time.
While speaking with the inspection team, the Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, expressed government’s readiness to make Idanre a tourist attraction and an international monument.
He explained that due to the construction of a world class resort at the foot of the hills and an 18 holes golf course at Atosin along Ondo-Akure road, there would be daily events that would attract people from across the globe to Idanre which would consequently generate foreign exchange earning to the state and country at large.
According to him, Governor Olusegun Mimiko was set on taking advantage of the presence of natural attraction in the town to build tourist facilities capable of inscribing the name of the town in gold on the world map.
The hill of Idanre is one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Nigeria and includes such cultural sites as Owa's Palace, Shrines, Old Court, Belfry, Agbooogun footprint, thunder water (Omi Apaara) and burial mounds and grounds.
It resides 3000 ft above sea level and houses a unique ecosystem upon which the cultural landscape has integrated. At the entrance of the hill is also a great tree called the Iraye Tree which is indeed a sight to behold.
