First Anglican University In The North Gets Free Hectares Of Land From Niger State Government

The Niger State government has given 100 hectares of land free to the Anglican Church for its proposed university.

This was made known by Gen Theophilus Danjuma at the Sod Turning Ceremony of the institution to be called Walter Miller University (WMU), this week.

According to the one time Minister of Defence who is also the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the school, this gesture is one of its kind in the country.

He said the university is being established in honour of Dr Miller, a pioneer Missionary who was actively involved in establishing schools, a church and dispensary in Northern Nigeria from 1902 to 1929 under the leadership of Bishop Tugwell.

He also clarified that the admission policy of the school will be free and fair and non-discriminatory. The study of comparative religion aimed at breaking down barriers to religion and better ethnic understanding will also be encouraged.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Prof. Adamu Baikie, said preparations are going on as they await approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC), before including the name of the school in the Joint Admission Matriculation Board, JAMB, brochure.
