Serious drama seems to be unfolding between the Federal Government, Nigerian Bottling Company, NBC and Coca Cola Nigeria Limited ,CCNL, over claims by a consumer of half empty Sprite cans.
Earlier this year, according to reports, precisely in February, a customer made a complain to the Consumer Protection Council, CPC about buying a pack of can Sprite and finding some of them half empty without it being opened.
Now fast forward to a statement issued yesterday by the CPC, saying that the two accused
firms have committed an offence by deliberately failing, refusing
and neglecting to comply with the council's orders.
The Attorney
General, Mohammed Bello Adoke, who is also the justice minister, filed
the suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja against Coca-Cola Nigeria
and its chief executive, and the NBC and its managing director for
criminal breach of the Consumer Protection Act.
However, the companies say they haven't been served any court summons in a statement by the Head, Public Affairs & Communications of NBC, Uzo Odenigbo and Head, Public Affairs & Communications of CCNL, Clem Ugorji. They clarify that they only found out about the summons through media reports.
It could be recalled that in February, CPC had warned Coca-Cola that Nigeria was not a “dumping ground for substandard products” as there had been about rusty cans, rusty bottle tops and foreign particles in some of their beverages.
I honestly can't wait to see how this pans out because in actual fact, I have heard various stories where some people claim to have found cockroaches and some other unidentifiable stuff in their drinks or juice. But because they believe nothing can be done if they report, life just goes on.
This will definitely serve as a wake up call to not only this company but others who don't pay too much attention to their customers complaints and of course we as consumers now know the CPC is working.
