Its nice buying cool stuff for our
kids but Parents are being warned of a cancer-scare involving fake accessories
for loom bands after tests revealed some imported batches were laced with
deadly levels of chemicals.
Looms bands are simple, colourful, rubber bands weaved together to make
friendship bracelets and were invented just last year in the US by Cheong
Choon. Since then his company Rainbow Looms has sold more than 4million kits and has been a hit with so many children.
Scientists have carried out tests on
several loom band 'charms', accessories attached to necklaces and bracelets made
from the colourful elastic bands, and each one was found to have dangerous
levels of phthalates in them.
This chemical is
used to make plastics more safe and flexible but it is also a known carcinogen
and its use is strictly controlled particularly in toys that could go in the
mouth(and we know most kids put stuff in their mouth)
The legal limit for phthalates
should be 0.1 per cent per weight, but some packets of charms tested had more
than this with some testing as high as 50 percent!!This was observed in some
batches that came in cheaper and unofficial box sets of loom bands in other
words fake and substandard ones.
Safety officials are now urging
parents to be vigilant when buying loom bands and charms, with the advice to
only buy packets with the 'CE' safety mark from reputable retailers.
Loom bands are also the latest fashion accessory for even adults as well and has been seen on royalty and stars like,Prince Williams and his wife Kate Middleton, David Beckham, One Direction's Harry Styles and pop star Miley Cyrus.
We Nigerians are also not left out as you know we always jump on whatever is 'reigning' so please be careful people.
