A
Catholic German priest has asked the Pope to give up his vow of celibacy.
Priest Stefan Hartmann sent a personal petition to Pope Francis this week via
his Facebook page and I was just wondering that it won’t be a bad idea.
Although
the requirement for priestly celibacy has been there for many years it has been
abused due to the fact that many priests have been caught sexually molesting
children, having gay relationships and some even have children despite this
oath.
Celibacy
is a state of abstaining from any form of sexual intercourse but because ‘body
no be wood’ it seems it is becoming hard for most of these priests to hold on
to it.
For
Priest Stefan, he revealed earlier this year that he has fathered a daughter
since 1989 a few years after he took his vow of celibacy and he has been hiding
that secret all these years and this made his superiors ask him to step down. My
question is since 1989 did having a child stop him from carrying out his
priestly services well since that time?
The
truth is there is a human right to sex, partnership and marriage even if one
gives it up for religious reasons. Even Paul in the Bible said if you cannot
bear it you should marry rather than burn in secret for wanting sex. I even
know of a lady who when we were in the university was having an affair with a
catholic priest and it went on for a long time!!!
So
the million dollar question is should catholic priests be allowed to marry and
remain ordained?
