Transport Unions Threaten Nationwide Strike In Protest Against Bad Roads Nationwide!

It is no longer unusual to ply badly damaged roads in different parts of the country and in protest against this ugly development, 3 major unions in the road transport sector, the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners, NARTO, Petroleum Tanker Drivers, PTD, and National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, have given the Federal Government an ultimatum.

According to reports from This Day newspaper, the unions have expressed their displeasure with the condition of the major road networks across the country and have given them 14 days to come up with plans and begin full scale rehabilitation of the roads.

In the event that the government fails to adhere to their request within the 14 days, they are threatening to down tools as all commercial vehicles will withdraw their services from the roads, thus closing down movement of people and goods across the country.

The National President of the unions, Kassim Bataiya, Salmon Oladiti and Najim Yasin, made their position known at the briefing which held in Abuja yesterday. Speaking further, Mr Bataiya said there is need for an intervention due to frequent loss of lives and property, vehicle breakdowns as well as accidents on the dilapidated road networks.
