Cholera Outbreak? 300 Students Of FGGC Efon Alaaye Affected!

Seeing the name of my town, Efon Alaaye in the news initially drew my attention to this story before I now realized how important it really is!

Reports from This Day newspaper say about 300 students of the Federal Government Girls’ College, Efon Alaaye in Ekiti State, have been hospitalized.

There are indications that there is a cholera epidemic in the school as some students have been vomiting and stooling incessantly. This has caused serious panic across the state, as parents have trooped to the school to pick their daughters.

However, the principal, Grace Ogunyomi, has reported the case to the state government and Governor Fayose ordered the Commissioner for Health, Olurotimi Ojo, to deploy professionals and drugs to help in curbing the spread.

Meanwhile, the commissioner says it is not cholera but a gastrointestinal infection popularly called diarrhea. So far the affected students have been responding to treatment while the Ministry of Health  has sent environmental health officials to observe the environment as to the cause of this outbreak.
