Mass Deactivation Of Sim Cards Attributed To Improper Registration

Earlier this week, some people suddenly found their phone lines had been deactivated which was in line with a directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, to telecommunication companies.

The reason for this was to deactivate unregistered Subscriber Identification Module, SIM, cards in order to check crimes being perpetuated using mobile phones.

NCC Director of Public Affairs, Tony Ojobo made it known in a statement in Abuja that the deactivation exercise was a result of the outcome of the meeting with the office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, the Department of State Service ,DSS, NCC and the telecom operators.

Operators were given a one-week ultimatum to deactivate unregistered and improperly registered SIM cards.  Although some subscribers have complained that they were deactivated even though they registered before now, there are indications that some registration were not properly done hence the deactivation.

According to Mr Ojobo, proper registration means a subscriber’s facial picture, biometrics, finger prints, valid means of identification, address, among others are properly captured.
