Senate Stops INEC From Creating Extra Polling Units Towards 2015 Election

The plans of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to create additional 30,000 new polling units in preparation for the 2015 election has been suspended by  the senate.

According to them, the timing is wrong for creation of the polling units which is meant to help in de-congesting voting centres that were over-populated. However, the move generated controversy as politicians from the Southern part of the country alleged that the arrangement was in favour of the North.

Although the INEC chairman Atahiru Jega appeared before the Senate Committee on INEC last week and insisted that the exercise was not done to the advantage of any candidate, political party, or section of the country.

Nevertheless, the Chairman Senate Committee on INEC, Andy Uba said if INEC goes ahead with the plan, the Senate would be left with no choice but to pass a resolution on the matter.
