It has become like the norm whereby you go to the hospital in Nigeria to complain about being sick and they immediately start to treat you for malaria or typhoid.
Just this morning I heard the sad news of the death of a family friend who was being treated for malaria and typhoid not knowing that he actually had cancer.
I know its easy to point accusing fingers at the doctors but the truth is sometimes a doctor can fail to correctly diagnose a condition because they relied on inaccurate results form laboratory tests, radiology films or other types of tests.
But the bottom line remains that when a doctor's diagnosis error leads to incorrect treatment, delayed
treatment, or no treatment at all, a patient's condition can be made worse, and they may even die just like the case of my family friend.
And this is a general issue that occurs not just in Nigeria alone. A 28 year old lady in Canada lost her life last year because a radiologist didn't see the cancerous tumor in her CT Scan. Unfortunately by the time she went back to complain of still feeling sick the cancer had spread to her vital organs and she died.
I guess it has gotten to the point where one cannot settle for a single diagnosis but should rather go for a second or even third opinion.
May the soul of the departed rest in peace.
