Federal Government Says No Plans To Ban Marriage Between Sickle Cell Carriers

The Federal Government has addressed the rumors that it would make marriage between carriers of the sickle cell disease in the country illegal.

Speaking on this matter, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Linus Awute, made it known that rather than ban marriage between such individuals, they would rather adopt aggressive public sensitization that would be geared towards creating more awareness about the disease in Nigeria.

According to him, criminalizing marriage between two carriers is undemocratic because it will amount to criminalizing love, so government is not even contemplating that option as everybody is free to choose his or her partner.

In addition to this, he said the government is also working towards integrating management of sickle cell and other non-communicable diseases in the nation’s primary healthcare system.

Meanwhile, statistics indicate that over 100 million persons in the world are affected by the disease, while an estimated 40 million Nigerians are carriers of the sickle cell trait.
