An African artist has won the most prestigious award at the 56th Venice Biennale in Italy.
El-Anatsui is a Ghanian and former professor of sculpture at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and has won the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement which is one of the top accolades in the international art world.
It will be presented to him on the 9th of May at the headquarters of the Biennale in Italy and the President of the Venice Biennale, Paola Baratta, says Anatsui is the most significant African artist working on the continent today.
Professor Anatsui is being given this honor for his contribution to the recognition of contemporary African artists in the global arena as well as his artistic vision, his long-term commitment to formal innovation.
He was also recently inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is one of the first Africans to become an honorary academician of Britian’s Royal Academy of Arts.
