With the high rate of rape in child sexual abuse prevalent in the state, I was so glad when I came across the news that Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, will sign an executive order establishing a sex offenders’ register in the state.
This is part of government’s efforts to reduce the rate of sexual and child abuse and was made known in a statement by the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team which is a group coordinated by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.
According to the Coordinator of the team, Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, the register is to provide names and other details of convicted sex offenders in a central database. It will then be accessible to whoever needs information such as school proprietors who want to recruit as a form of background check.
Furthermore, the policy will also make it compulsory for all school administrators, teachers, and other officials having dealings with children to report any suspected or actual child abuse to the attorney-general.
The governor will be inaugurating the sex offenders’ register on Monday, 1st of December 2014, at the Lagos House, Ikeja.
This is indeed a welcome development....kudos to Governor Babatunde Fashola!
