In a case of better late than never,the designer of the national flag, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, has finally been given a National Honours Award yesterday in recognition of the flag he designed since 1959.
At the age of 23, Taiwo Akinwunmi took part in an entry for the design of a new National Flag and he was chosen as the winner. The flag was then officially first used on the 1st of October 1960, Nigeria’s Independence Day.
Asides getting the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic, OFR National Award, President Goodluck Jonathan also said 78 year old Taiwo Akinkunmi would be receiving a salary equivalent to that of a Special Assistant to the president for the rest of his life.
